We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to save the historic Jester Farmhouse, for local artists of all disciplines and skill levels to use as meeting, working, and gallery space. Jester Artspace, Inc. has partnered with the property owner, New Castle County, Del., to renovate the property. In turn, we will operate the house in a manner of direct benefit to the surrounding community. The Jester Farmhouse has been deemed to be of significant historic value to the people of New Castle County. It is one of the few remaining modest pre-Civil War farmsteads that were once common in Northern Delaware. The house sits amid 25.8 acres of original farmland at 2818 Grubb Road, which is among the oldest colonial-era trade routes in the mid-Atlantic U.S.
Please donate if you can. Your contributions are fully tax-deductible. Our donors receive original, limited-edition, artist-signed prints. Do something good for the arts in Brandywine Hundred and enjoy a piece of original art! If you would like us to stay in touch, you can also join our email list.

The in-person support of the community meant that we could save the original doors and trim from the house to put back in the restoration process. I just had a very productive talk with park neighbor George Frigm (he said I could use his name). He had various concerns about the farmhouse construction but also he had concerns about our future activities. One issue is that our website mentioned "concerts" as a possible future activity. He said there were worries in the community that we might be planning to host some very large events with terrible noise and traffic. We aren't, but I thought he had a really good point that we had not done enough to talk about our plans with the neighbors.

For starters, I just updated our site to say, "modest, community-friendly performances" and I agreed to write this post. I assured George that we are just volunteers who want to be a benefit not a burden. We agreed to keep talking. I hope anyone else in the community who has questions will reach out to us like George did. We love to hear from you.

Email us at board@jesterartspace.org and I will set up a time to chat.

Thank you!

Hi friends and neighbors,

I'd like to give you all an Artspace project update as we head into the holidays.

First of all I want to mention the restoration of the farmhouse. Many people have noticed the dramatic teardown of the newer wing of the farmhouse and some have reached out to us directly. I know this isn't exactly what we all had in mind when we started this project.

And I agree, it's heartbreaking to see so much come down. What you see on the site now is the old original pre-Civil War stone core. We pushed to get the County to save the whole house, but after public bidding, they were only able to stay in their budget if they tore down the newer parts and rebuilt it. When our board was presented with this option last year, we took a deep breath, and decided that it was the best outcome we could hope for after decades of decay. There was just too much damage and the project had to move forward if we were going to save anything at all.

When the County hands it off to us (expected in the middle of 2021), we will fit-out the interior as a small art gallery and workspace for community benefit, as you see in these drawings by ABHA Architects. We have a 20-year lease for the house and the acre around it that will begin at hand-off.

I know there have also been hard feelings about the Hy-Point Dairy cattle being removed from the surrounding park this year. Believe me, I'm as disappointed as anyone. I used to pass those cows every day on my way to school. But Hy-Point had a separate lease and we had no say in whether they stayed or not.

Looking forward, we are excited that the restoration has begun. It's been a long five years for us to reach this point. Despite the impact of COVID on our programming, we still have had some very successful outdoor events and video workshops. We are especially proud of the professional development training we coordinated between the art teachers of Brandywine School District and our friends at Moonloop Photography

We have also forged some great friendships with other nonprofits like Newark Union Church & Cemetery. We had a great sketch event with them in November and we hope to cooperate with them further. And as always, we love working with our friends at Urban Sketchers Delaware, our local chapter of the international nonprofit, Urban Sketchers.

So I do hope we can continue to have your support as we approach 2021. Restoration will be a big job for us. We will also need your input on our planned sculpture garden, our landscaping, and programming.

Be well, stay safe, and Happy Holidays,

Alan Baseden

Thanks for the update and your dedication!

Susan Zeager Terri Croney Borkland

Were pictures taken of the inside before it was torn down? It’s so sad they couldn’t afford the restoration.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop, Alan.
